The only black triathlete?
While competing in Hawaii, I noticed that I appeared to be the only African American competitor. My wife Kira recently wrote an interesting post about it in her blog Brilliant Color.
So, am I the only one?
I hope there are others out there, though I haven't seen anyone. I'm training for my first tri this July (pushingtotri.blogspot.com) and my significant other is into multisport events (onmultisport.blogspot.com).
You're not alone! I too am training for my very first Tri in July 09. Also, I found your blog by doing a google search for "black triathletes" -glad that you came up in Google's results list (#1 actually). Anyway, I'll be doing my best to document my adventures at stepawayfromtheledge.blogspot.com.

I'm one, can I join the club? Wait, but why? I live in Asia, train with mostly French, and compete with who/whatever steps up to the start-line. Of course I noticed I am usually the only one but I could say that about SCUBA, surfing, skiing, crew/skulling, hoops- maybe not. But never thought to join a club (within a club) over it. I guess some people just like affiliations. See ya in Kona?

I'm one too. Well, I'm just starting, but am doing an olympic, and a sprint triathlon in August. I was was hoping to find some other African Americans to train with :)
I've participated in triathlons since 2006 and have consistently noticed that I was the only black male competing. I did see two black women once. I'm actively trying to recruit others.
I see one other guy at the tri's I do in KC. It would be nice to see more. My wife has no desire to swim in "dirty" lake water. I relate it to the number of black people I have seen actually swimmming laps in the pool. Not many.

I'm from Saint Croix living in Maryland. I've completed Saint Croix 70.3 4 times and once with my 1st cousin. My good friend Lloyd Henry is also an accomplished triathlete and triathlon coach. You can find Lloyd (my name as well) at OnPoint Fitness in Washington, DC.

I wish there were more black triathletes. In my first race last year, I was the only African American. I couldn't pull up the triunify website. Does anyone know if it still exists?
I'm a Black triathlete and have been competing since 2005. I'm in LA and I'm starting to see an increase in numbers. I'm not the only guy out there anymore. I've completed from sprints to Iron distances. In 2013 my wife and I will compete in Ironman Arizona. Can't wait. I got into the sport because I was bored with just running. Needed something to push myself. As a kid, I swam... rather played in the pool but after joining Team in Training, I learned distance swimming and loved it. I think a lot of Black people aren't into triathlons because it's not ever talked about in the community. I don't believe in the money excuse. Anybody can do this sport if they really wanted to. Discretionary income is spent on what you like. I ain't rich but I got nice gear because I worked for it. Triathletes are some loyal ass people. Disciplined. Persistent. I like that. Also why I'm in sport psychology. Why not get the write-off while you play? www.sbjpsych.com
My wife and I are African American Triathletes in the 45-50 age groups. We currently live in Northern Califaornia and absolutely enjoy competing in Tri competitions. Last year we completed Ironman Nice France, Folsom CA Half Ironman,LA Olympic, Marin CA Olympic and the San Jose International Tri. Last weekend(4/22/12) I completed the New Orleans half Ironman at 5:18:41--ok time but I am improving. I am scheduled for the San Diego ITU Olympic May 12, 2012 and Ironman Florida later this year. My wife will do Ironman Cozemel this summer. Yes, a few years ago my wife and I were the only African American Triathletes in our races. Lately, I have seen increasing numbers of African American participating in races. For example, I counted a least seven in New Orleans. Regarding Kona, I would love to compete there. I just need to improve my run splits. Here is a suggestion, lets just set-up a website where all of us folks can support each other, race together and provide performance advice. Anyone? By the way, I absolutely love "double diamond" snow skiing in Lake Tahoe as well.
Hello fellow Triathlete. I plan to compete in the LA Olympic in 2012 in September. I really enjoy that race. It is the most diverse race I have ever participated in. Additionally, my wife, brother-in-law and college friend will all compete as well--all are African American. Hope to see you there. Skihappy
